The statistics speak for themselves, with millions worldwide affected by mental health disorders. Approximately 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. According to the surveys, it is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer from major depression once in their lives. UNICEF also reports that, globally, suicide is ranked fourth among the most common causes of death among young people. Individuals with serious mental health issues also have substance use disorders. Additionally, these individuals pose a higher risk of using nonprescription opioids. Recognizing the magnitude of this issue is the first step towards building a more compassionate society.
Mental illness encompasses a broad spectrum of conditions that affect a person’s thinking, behavior, and emotions. It can manifest in various forms, such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Highlighting the diversity within mental illness helps dispel misconceptions and encourages empathy towards those experiencing these conditions. Many people suffering from mental illnesses goes undiagnosed. Even after being diagnosed, the poor quality of treatment doesn’t help solve the problem at its root. Failure to address mental health issues has adverse effects on society.
Living in an ever-changing, high-pressure world takes its toll on mental health. Mental stress, often caused by work-related pressures, relationship issues, or financial burdens, can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout. It may also result in social isolation, further disrupting their interaction with others and having negative effects on their emotional well-being. They may develop a feeling of being different and fear judgment from others. It is crucial to acknowledge and address the adverse effects of chronic stress on mental well-being to prevent more severe conditions from developing.
People with mental disabilities face unique challenges that can hinder their integration into society. Marginalized communities, including racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual minorities, as well as people belonging to low socioeconomic status, face worse mental health issues compared to other communities. By embracing inclusivity and providing appropriate support, we can help individuals with mental disabilities lead fulfilling lives. Providing them access to mental health facilities without discrimination or any implicit bias can help individuals recover from various mental illnesses. Forming a diverse representation in the mental health field can make it easier for professionals to understand their patients’ issues. Consequently, making it more accessible for patients to address their issues more openly. Advocating for accessibility, equal opportunities, and understanding can break down barriers and foster a sense of belonging.
